Welcome to Barnet Judo
JUDO is a discipline with its roots in the Japanese martial arts (Budo). Professor Jigaro Kano created it around 1870 in Japan. He extracted relatively safe techniques (throws holds, arm-locks, chokes and strangles) from the more dangerous art of Jujitsu, taught break-falling, and formed them into a comprehensive sport which he called Judo (the gentle way). Judo has a deep and lasting beneficial effect on the physique and psychology of children. It channels aggression and, because of the close-contact nature of the sport, teaches respect and care for ones fellow participants. The benefits of Judo training may be defined as The Seven Ss of Judo: SKILL, STRENGTH, SUPPLENESS, SPEED, STAMINA, SELF-CONFIDENCE and SELF-DISCIPLINE.
The Lyonsdown Judo club was created by Bryan Marcus and Tony Larkins in September 1982 as a non-profit-making family and community-based club. We are affiliated to the British Judo Council, allowing members to enter competitions and other outside events and to ensure that grades are of a nationally recognised standard. In 2008 the club opened a new dojo at Woodhouse College and changed it’s name to Barnet Judo to reflect that it covers the whole Barnet area.
Coaching at the club is currently led by Simon Mazzullo (6th Dan and previous BJC Champion), Maurice Tambwe (2nd Dan), Ashley Gaitley (1st Dan). Other senior members are encouraged to take coaching qualifications and hopefully will be helping out on the mat.
Judo Etiquette and Discipline
In keeping with the traditions of Judo, you are expected to bow in and out of the hall, and on and off the mat. Respect must be shown to the instructors and to your fellow participants. Fingernails and toenails must be kept well cut and jewellery and watches may not be worn on the mat. Girls should wear a white tee shirt under the Judo jacket. Invest in a pair of Judo slippers or flip-flops these should be worn off the mat and left at the edge of the mat during practice.
For your own safety and that of others you are expected to pay attention and obey instructions immediately.
Beginners should not regard judo as a self-defence art, and must not be used to show off, bully or intimidate. It may not be used or shown outside the club (except at an organised display), and anyone doing so may be asked to leave.
PARENTS of small children are requested to stay and watch. Parents who are able are asked to help with the laying and putting away of the mats please note that the instructors teach on a purely voluntary basis. No one gets paid!
Child Protection Policy
Barnet Judo takes the welfare and safety of all its members and guests very seriously, but especially children.
The club has drawn up an extensive Child Protect Policy and in accordance with our ‘open’ policy, it can be viewed here.
What you will learn as a beginner
Safety
Safety is basic to Judo. First you will learn to fall without injury - breakfalling. You cannot throw or be thrown without being able to do a breakfall. Within a few weeks beginners will also learn the basics of throws and grappling techniques. Judo is great recreational fun, but our first priority is safety.
Gradings
Gradings are held at about 3-monthly intervals. Beginners will be eligible for their first grading after three months of regular attendance. Gradings will usually be held under the auspices of the North London Area of the BJC.
New Aapplicants
New Aapplicants please note: Child development is highly individual, and we reserve the right, in the interests of the class as a whole, to refuse to teach a particular child on the grounds of poor behaviour or lack of attention to instructions.
New Membership and Fee Structure
After 4 weeks of regular attendance, beginners will be expected to join the club as members and to apply for a BJC Licence. YOU CANNOT BE GRADED OR TAKE PART IN COMPETITIONS WITHOUT A BJC LICENCE AND CLUB MEMBERSHIP.
Club practice fees
Club practice fees are payable on a term basis. The 10-week pre-paid fees will apply to all members. This is optional for seniors. In cases of holidays or prolonged illness, we will pass the missed weeks on, (as we do when the Club is closed), so your paid weeks will not be lost. But in general you will be expected to pay the 10-week fees whether you attend regularly or not.
Membership Fees (Seniors and Juniors)
NEW APPLICANTS (1st year's fee inclusive of BJC Licence and insurance) £60.00
RENEWALS £48.
People joining part way through the year will pay a pro-rata fee for the months up to the following September, with a minimum charge of £48. The membership fee includes BJC membership.

ALL MEMBERS to pay £40 for 10 weeks.
